Concert For China

Friday Cello Trio

On the 5th July, 2008, Community Church Hull hosted a concert to raise funds for persecuted Christians in China.

It was a night of enjoyment and praise, with an ecclectic mix of music, everything from classical to contemporary, and thought provoking drama.

The night kicked off with the Friday Cello Trio, made up of  siblings Bekah and Ben Horrigan along with Josh Salter, who soon showed that they are far from a two dimensional trio, by treating us to some classical style Metallica!

Then it was the turn of the students of vocal tutor Jan Overfield. Accompanied by Jan on piano, Meg sang her version of Cyndi Lauper's 80s hit 'Time After Time'.
Next, Hannah opted for the song 'For Good', from the Broadway musical 'Wicked', a show which explores the back story behind the two witches in the Wizard of Oz.
Jess also chose a song from that same musical in 'I'm Not That Girl', before launching into her own cockney sparrow rendition of 'By the Sea'  from the musical 'Sweeny Todd'.

Jan herself then took to the stage to treat us to a couple of numbers from 'Guys and Dolls'.

The jazz band 'Deep Roots' were next on the bill, a group of very talented musicians who attend St John's church, aswell as our own Bekah Horrigan on drums.

A break from the fun of the music to bring back home the levity of the situation in China came next.  The CCH Youth's dramatic interpretation of life under a regime of religious persecution was a timely reminder of the concert's purpose.

The final act of the night was the CCH Worship Group, leading the audience in praise in their usual wonderful uplifting manner. The night wouldn't have been complete, however, without an injection of humour by our very own Steve Littlewood, when he led the band in a rousing rendition of Status Quo favourite 'Rockin' All Over The World'!

A fantastic night was had by all, and to all the people who attended, thanks to everyone!! Watch this space for the next event!
